The Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), which governed only North Vietnam, was proclaimed on 2 Sep 1945. The division of the country was formalized by the Geneva Accords of 21 Jul 1954, which transformed the de facto independence of the North into de jure recognition. On 30 Apr 1975, following the military collapse of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), northern forces established the Republic of South Vietnam. This provisional government was then unified with the DRV to create the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 2 Jul 1976.

(1) Vietnamese Communist Party (DCV) was also the original name, from Feb 1930 to Oct 1930. Successive names of the party were: Indochinese Communist Party (DCSD, Oct 1930-May 1951, which was officially dissolved 11 Nov 1945 and merged into the League for the Independence of Vietnam -"Viet Minh"-, although continued in secret to 1951); Vietnamese Workers' Party (DLDV, May 1951-Dec 1976); and again DCV since 20 Dec 1976.<br>
(2) The post of president of the party was abolished after the death of Ho Chi Minh.<br>
(3) The First Secretary became the top party post when the presidency was abolished on 2 Sep 1969; it was renamed to General Secretary on 20 Dec 1976.
